Good Afternoon Rochester Area Construction (WMBE) Small Business Support Partners –

 

The City of Rochester and Destination Medical Center Targeted Business (TB) and Workforce (WF) Participation Report for December 2022 with performance results through November 2022 is attached.

 

Targeted Business and Workforce Participation Capacity-building Strategies

  1. 1.       City and DMC teammates reviewed six proposals submitted to research Disadvantaged Business Enterprise barriers and make recommendations for improving our DBE contracting on City of Rochester/DMC public infrastructure projects. See the COR DMC TB & WP report attached to see who has been selected.
  2. 2.       DMC teammates and I met with Kraus-Anderson to discuss lessons learned about Targeted Business during Bryk on Broadway (private investment) project. We will be meeting with the developer to discuss further.
  3. 3.       I will be meeting with Elcor Construction in January to discuss Targeted Business and Workforce Participation lessons learned on DMC (North Broadway) and City CIP (65th Street and 9th Street Duct Bank projects).
  4. 4.       We received a handwritten thank you note from the Minnesota Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans for sponsoring their annual event in September. I have meetings scheduled with Building Strong Communities and the Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs and Indian Affairs We have also connected with Minnesota Council on African Heritage.
  5. 5.       DMC communications staff and I will be meeting with Building Strong Communities and Workforce Development, Inc. to strategize communications with diverse audiences about construction trades training opportunities. We are in the process of producing the Explore Careers in Construction videos in Spanish.

 

Well that’s a wrap for 2022. I look forward to all we can do to help our disadvantaged community members thrive in our growing economy in 2023!

Project Phase Definitions
The following defines the various project phases:
  1. Available - a product, program or service is in production
  2. Develop - program or application is being developed
  3. Plan - idea is solid, stakeholders are identified, and there is strong commitment to go forward from all parties.
  4. Concept Phase - idea scoped out with enough details to give an early sizing and/or to build a proof of concept
    demonstration
  5. Pre-concept Phase - an early idea or a requirement.
About Beam

Community Beam (dmcbeam.org) is a registry of private and public resources (organizations, projects, initiatives, programs) that underpin economic and social developments of greater Rochester:

  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
