Al Lun: Board Member of Diversity Council
At the July 24, 2018 Rochester mayoral debate, hosted by KTTC TV and Rochester Community and Technical College - RCTC a lot of good questions about housing, transportation, education.
I was inline waiting to ask my question. At first I had in mind of getting a measure of each candidate's thinking on what it means to lead Rochester to be a City for Health: what does health mean and for whom? Then it dawned on me "global culture and reach" is an area seldom got brought up: What is the role, if any, of the mayor and elected local officials in transforming the city culturally into a global city. I didn't get to ask my question that night as TV time expired.
But I remain wanting to hear from local leaders: Does Rochester aspire to be an "international city"? (DMC implicitly leads us toward that direction). What is the role of local government? Is it to help it along? Or be indifferent to it (let the invisible hand of marketplace take its course)? Does a "smallish" local government like Rochester's have a role in cultural transformation?
This Diversity Council event is a timely trigger for leaders to learn, think and talk deeper about this topic.
